Woburn Host Lions Club Visits Scheppens Institute
Recently, the Woburn Host Lions visited Scheppens Institute to learn of the latest developments in eye research. Scheppens is one of several organizations that recieve grants from the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund. During the visit we learned of some very encouraging work being done to prevent blindness caused by Glaucoma. We were also given an opportunity to tour the facility and see first hand some of the amazing equipment purchased as a result of the Lions donations.
Schepens Eye Research Institute, Massachusetts Eye and Ear fights blindness by developing new technologies, therapies and knowledge to retain and restore vision. Through a continuum of discovery, the Institute works toward a future in which blindness is prevented, alleviated, and, ultimately, cured.
A main goal of the Host Lions club is to raise funds for Massachusetts Lions Eye Research. These funds enable the medical research staffs of institutions such as Tufts Medical, Boston University, and Schepens Institute to find cures for eye diseases and to develop new treatment methods for traumatic eye injuries. We are very proud of the fact that we are one of only four Lions clubs in Massachusetts to have donated over $525,000 to the Eye Research Fund. .
Our members also do whatever is needed to help our local communities. Some of the local organizations we support include the Council of Social Concern, Woburn Memorial High School Scholarship Fund, Girls and Boys Club of Woburn, and numerous youth programs.
The Woburn Host Lions meet every Thursday evening at 6:30PM at the Crowne Plaza hotel. Contact any of our members if you are interested in joining an energetic and fun group of folks determined to make life better for others.
